Key Principles of the Scheme

The Duke of Edinburgh Scheme is aimed at young people aged 14-25 who want to participate in exciting and enjoyable activities in their free time.

image of student hikers reading a mapThere are three levels of Award - Bronze, Silver and Gold. You can begin at any level depending upon your age and the amount of time you have available.

Visit the D of E website  to find out more or speak to the D of E leaders in school.

The key principles are:

  • Non-competitive - a personal challenge, not a competition
  • Available to all - anyone can do it!
  • Voluntary - it's up to you what you do - it's your leisure time
  • Flexible - your programme is designed by you for you
  • Balanced - it will stretch you in all directions
  • Progressive - you improve at your own pace
  • Achievement focused - you can't fail!
  • Marathon not a sprint - it takes more than a short burst of enthusiasm
  • Personal development - it's the taking part that matters; getting and Award is the icing on the cake
  • Enjoyable - it's about getting there and having fun!

What will I get out of it?

  • Enjoyment
  • Self-belief
  • A sense of identity
  • A sense of responsibility
  • New talents and abilities
  • The ability to plan and use time effectively
  • Skills including problem solving, presentation and communication
  • An understanding of your strengths and weaknesses
  • Self-confidence
  • Independence - of thought and action
  • An awareness of your potential
  • New relationships
  • The ability to learn from and give to others in the community
  • A record of your achievements and skills gained
  • Experiences that will be remembered for life!

On successful completion of each level you will be presented with a badge and certificate and at Gold level you are invited to a Presentation Ceremony at one of the Royal Palaces.
