Italian students spend a week at Ousedale
Students from ITIS Marconi, a large technology college to the north of Milan, have spent the last week at Ousedale School for a Learning Week with the theme of Renewable Energies.
The course has provided an introduction to the main renewable energy technologies including Solar Water Heating and Ground Source Heat Pumps. Workshops have been run by staff from ITIS Marconi as well as guest speakers from the National Energy Foundation who have provided students with a comprehensive introduction to photovoltaics, wind turbines and ground source heat pumps. As well as working in school, the students have visited Shuco International, Oakgrove School and Bedford College.
Ousedale students joined the Italian students for some of the sessions during the week as well as introducing them to life as a sixth form student at Ousedale.

Video conferences
Several departments have used our state of the art video conferencing facilities to link up with students across the country, and globe.
After initial apprehension about how they would look on camera and how (and if!) the technology would work, many staff have embraced the opportunity to enhance the learning experience of many of our students.
Thanks to our ICT technician Liam Farrow, each conference has run smoothly with no lost connections.
The maths department are now becoming VC experts, having run events with all years. Year 7 have explored magic squares with mathematicians from Cambridge University. Students from some of our feeder schools have also participated in a two part conference looking at ‘Calculator Fun’. Students from Olney Middle School are currently working with year 7 students on a two part conference on 'Pattern and Shape'. Click here to see some of the follow up work they have been doing.
The science department have also been conferencing, this time on the subject of Astrophysics. Organised by Rob Cullis at Bedford School with a Sheffield based lecturer, both Upper and Lower Sixth students attended. The particular subject was the search for extrasolar planets which seems to very popular these days. The lecturer also considered advances that will come on stream when the new Space Telescope is launched in a few years.
Feedback from all students that have participated in conferences has been very positive. They have been enthusiastic participants and are keen to meet students from schools in different areas.
