Cross curricular projects

As part of our commitment to raise standards in the three specialist areas (Maths, Science and Design Technology), there has been increased collaboration between the three departments. Year 7 have taken part in several cross curricular projects. This is currently being extended and developed into year 8 and 9.

Mission to Mars

The first project took place in October 2008. Over the course of the week, year 7 students participated in a variety of activities with SPACE theme. A mobile planetarium visited both campuses, giving students the chance to observe different views of the night sky. Students also had talks on the solar system and other aspects of space and space exploration from several visitors. In design Technology they investigated the types of food that are used on space explorations as well as cooking up some moon rocks.

The mobile planetarium lands in the school hall.

Pizza to Go

During the Spring term, year 7 undertook their second project, based around the theme of Pizza. As well as taste testing several different brands, students analysed the nutritional content of a selection of pizzas and produced a report for a company that wished to start a delivery business. In technology lessons students designed and made a pizza box and then made the pizza to go inside.

Bacteria

The final project of the year is called 'Bacteria' and will take place towards the end of the year. Subject staff are currently in the process of planning a series of lessons based around this theme.
