Sociology at Ousedale School

| Qualification | AS and A2 Level |
| Examining Board | AQA |
| Head Of Department | Mr C Whiting |
The syllabus reflects the basic aim of the course, which is to promote a critical awareness of the social world in which we live. Students are encouraged to learn to use sociological methods and theories in order to develop an awareness and appreciation of the complex and diverse nature of society with particular reference to class, gender, ethnicity and cultural differences.
Throughout the two years a variety of approaches to the course are used, ranging from note-taking in lecture-style lessons, discussions, seminar work and individual study on sociological issues. The students should develop a set of intellectual skills such as comprehension, interpretation, presentation, analysis and the ability to construct a clear and logical argument, which will be easily transferable to other subjects.
The following topics will be studied over the full A2 course:
- Family and Households - explaining changing family patterns
- Education - unequal educational achievement, the curriculum and the role of education in society
- Sociological Methods - main methods and sources used by sociologists and their relationship to theory
- Power and Politics - explanations of power, the state and patterns of voting behaviour
- Stratification and Differentiation - inequalities in class, gender ethnicity and age and changes in class structure
Assessment is by 6 short examinations with a mixture of data response questions and essays. All three modules are examined in the summer. Three separate papers are taken:
- Unit 1: Families and Households
- Unit 2: Education
- Unit 3: Methods
Three further modules are examined at the end of the second year (2008-9 only):
- Unit 4: Power and Politics
- Unit 5: Theories and Methods
- Unit 6: Stratification and differentiation
These are essay-based papers, although some data is included as a stimulus.
