Health, Sex And Relationships Education
The Health Education programme in the school is taught by specialists through subject areas in an integrated approach. For example, issues related to personal hygiene and health are explored in the Year 8 Life Skills programme. This course also includes awareness of drugs, alcohol and tobacco abuse. These topics are reinforced in other subjects such as Drama in year 8 and 9, with an emphasis being placed on reflecting on the possible future consequences of a particular action, and the factors which may influence personal decision making.
Following publication of Circular 5/94 the Governors of Ousedale School have confirmed that Sex and Relationships Education will continue to be offered to all students. The current policy is available on request from the school. Our aims, set within a strong moral and values framework, are as follows:-
- In broad terms the sex education at Ousedale will provide students with the knowledge and skills which will help them to understand their bodies, their sexuality and feelings, and those of others.
- Sex Education provision at Ousedale will help individuals to make wise choices and decisions about their personal behaviour and sexual health.
- We will help students to develop and grow into responsible adults who are able to form stable, loving sexual relationships.
- To inform students of those aspects of the law currently relating to sexual behaviour.
Parents have the right to withdraw their child from those parts of Sex Education not required by the National Curriculum. Should you wish to make this choice you should contact Mr Burton, Deputy Head.
Any changes to this provision of Sex Education will only be made if approved by the Governing Body.
