Physics as a subject can be most rewarding and interesting, but it is conceptually demanding and is therefore a high status subject. Our aim in choosing our new course was to have a specification which reflected many of the major research themes in Physics such as Particle Physics and Astronomy, but also gave students a thorough grounding in the basics.
Students as encouraged to look at Physics in the context of the wider world and to use the skills and knowledge they acquire to solve problems. Many students take Physics along with other related courses and use it as a springboard to go on to study a range of courses in Higher Education. In addition to Physics, these include many of the Physical Science disciplines, Medicine and all of the various engineering courses. In addition, the analytical, communication, and technical skills that are so integral to a Physics course, are in great demand in a variety of employment areas. We have heard reports that many employers in the IT field will take on Physics graduates in preference to those with IT degrees. They have a broader skill and knowledge base in addition to a high level of IT skills. We also have reports of Physics graduates being sought after in the City by financial institutions. Those with a knowledge of Physics should be better equipped to cope in the modern high tech world in which we live and work.
