Introduction to Course
Community studies is an interesting and exciting course leading to a Certificate in Life Skills - this is not a GCSE course. Through the written and practical work, students will be able to develop many important personal and social skills which will be useful in adult life.
The emphasis is upon personal responsibility, the ability to work and communicate with others and deal with a variety of challenging subject areas and situations.
Course Content
The topics covered include the needs of individuals and the community. For example, we shall look at the family and its role in society and the needs of people with disabilities and the elderly. The course will give plenty of chances to take part in group work and discussion on practical issues such as maintaining a home and safety issues.
Lessons for two terms will be spent out on placement at a school, playgroup or residential home for the elderly. Lessons during the other terms will be spent in the classroom looking at community issues.
Year 11 students will be able to work towards the St. John's Ambulance Three Cross Award Certificate in Emergency Aid.
Course Assessment
100% Coursework. This consists of a combination of monitored assessment tasks, placement diaries and individual research projects.
