Homework and Extended Projects

readingWe regard homework as an extension of our planned curriculum. We value the opportunity that it provides for our students to progress and to develop the skills necessary to become independent learners for life. Homework covers a wide range of activities. Older students studying for GCSE examinations will find that a lot of time is allocated for the preparation or completion of course work.

We ask parents to support us in seeing that homework is done conscientiously and in the best possible conditions. Homework/coursework activities are set every week by subject staff, and time is allocated according to a Homework Timetable.   To help acquire the necessary organisation, we give all students in Years 7 to 11 a School Planner in which to record their homework each day.

Understandably some parents feel there is little they can do to help with learning at home, but in fact there are many ways in which they can support their children: giving encouragement and advice; checking presentation, handwriting and spelling; testing what has been set to be learnt; listening to them reading what they have written; asking them to explain what they have been studying.

We recognise that people work at different speeds and so homework will take longer for some students than for others. If there is a repeated problem over homework we encourage parents to get in touch with the form tutor or subject teacher. Similarly, we shall contact parents if we feel there are difficulties which parents could help resolve.
