Careers Education And Guidance
This is taught directly in a number of subject lessons. At important times for making choices about courses at KS4 and what to do after compulsory schooling ends discrete lessons are organised. Work in these classes and the programme delivered in conjunction with the Careers Service is designed to make students think about themselves in relation to the whole spectrum of employment and to give comprehensive, accurate and up to date careers information about opportunities in education, training and employment. Guidance is given throughout the whole timetable and within subject areas such as the Life Skills programme in Year 8. In their last compulsory school year all students are required to undertake a two-week period of Work Experience.
In the Sixth Form the Assistant Headteacher and her Year Heads are the main co-ordinators and advisers on University and other Higher Education entrance and on careers commencing at 17+ and 18+.
We have an extensive Careers Library with associated computer facilities. These are of particular use in years 11 and 13 when the programme concentrates in more detail on the career aspirations and university entrance of individual students. In addition a range of speakers visit the school throughout the year. Parents are always welcome to contact the school’s attached Careers Officer who also attends Parents’ Evenings for Years 9 and 11.
