Science Year 9 Inheritance and Human Fitness Homework

Background Information

  • The circulatory system is made up of the heart and blood vessels.
  • The heart is made up of cardiac muscle which pumps blood around the body.
  • Muscle cells need a supply of oxygen to work effectively.
  • The respiratory system includes the lungs whose function is to exchange the gases oxygen and carbon dioxide.
  • Aerobic respiration is the break down of glucose using oxygen for the maximum release of energy.

What you  have to do

Your task is to ‘create’ a genetically modified super fit human.

You will need to:

  1. Describe a human as they exist today, explaining both the blood circulatory and respiratory systems which relate to fitness

  2. Then you will need to describe your ‘super fit human’, stating what modifications you have made to their organs such as their lungs or heart that enable them to become super fit.

  3. Lastly you will need to explain how you ‘made’ your super fit human. Did you insert a gene into their genetic make-up or did you use selective breeding. If you inserted a gene, how did you do this? Did you use a virus for example?

Your may present your homework as written work or you could produce a series of annotated diagrams. An annotated diagram is when you label and explain certain structures on your diagram.  The choice is yours, please feel free to be as creative as you like!
