Science Additional Science - Additional Chemistry Homework

What you have to do

1. The history of the Atom

Create a time line showing the development of our scientific knowledge and ideas of the atom. Start with good old Democritus (400BC) and finish with modern ideas such as the ‘quarks and leptons’.

2. Nanoscience & Nanotechnology

Nanoscience is a new & exciting area of science that is estimated to have a market value of $1,500 billion by 2010.

Firstly you need to define the following terms a) Nanoscience, b) nanometer and c) nanoparticles.

You then need to research the impact that nanotechnology can have on new computers, catalysts, coatings, sensors, construction materials and medicine.

3. Hydrogen as a fuel

The homework relates to the electrolysis topic, particularly the electrolysis of brine. One of the products of this industrial process is hydrogen gas.

Research and write a report (1 side of A4) on the use of hydrogen as a fuel. Is it safe as fuel? How could it be used? What are the environmental implications?

4. Fritz Haber…A great or dangerous scientist of our times?

Read the two articles on the links below. The first discusses the role Fritz Haber played for the Germans in the First World War. The second is written for the Nobel Prize website and tells a very different tale.

Firstly summarise the view points of both articles. What feeling about Fritz Haber do you get from each one?

Secondly discuss why each website has such differing views. Note that both are true. Why, in the light of your readings, do you feel it is very important to take more than one view point into account?

It is also interesting to note that in his early career his wife, Clara Haber, was a massive influence. She did not carryout her own studies because at the time women were not allowed to do research. Is it not suggestive of the kind of man or society that makes no reference to her influence?
