CASHLESS CATERING
Ousedale School operates a cashless payment system in the dining rooms. Cash is no longer taken for food except in the vending machines. Instead we use a biometric system which entails the student’s fingerprint being scanned. The software converts the fingerprint into a numeric code which is then encrypted to make the data secure. It is not possible to recreate the fingerprint or make it available to any other organisation, from the number stored on the system. The student then accesses their catering account and also the library system by fingerprint recognition.
As with all personal data held within the school, we comply with the data protection principles as laid down in the Data Protection Act 1998.
The use of the cashless system ensures that the money you give to your son/daughter is used for the purpose you intended – to buy snacks/lunch in the dining room. Some of the other benefits are:
- A daily spend limit can be put on students’ accounts to ensure that they only spend a certain amount each day. As a guide, £2.50 should be enough to buy lunch and a drink. However, if students wish to visit the dining room at other times, eg before school or during morning break time, a higher limit will be required.
- It provides a considerably quicker service and reduces queues.
- Students entitled to free school meals remain anonymous.
- Less cash being carried by students so less chance of bullying.
- The system will allow us to make special promotions, for example healthy eating options.
FREE SCHOOL MEALS
Ousedale School operates a cashless payment system in the dining rooms. Students who are entitled to free school meals have their allowance credited electronically to their account, therefore allowing them to remain completely anonymous.
Children whose parents receive the following support payments are entitled to receive free school meals:
- Income Support (IS);
- Income Based Jobseekers Allowance (IBJSA);
- support under part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999; or
- Child Tax Credit (provided you are not entitled to Working Tax Credit) and have an annual income that does not exceed £14,495 (as assessed by Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs). As from 6 April 2007;
- Guarantee element of State Pension Credit.
Children who receive Income Support or Income Based Jobseekers Allowance in their own right are also entitled to receive free school meals.
Children who receive "education suitable for children who have not attained compulsory school age" will need to satisfy the additional requirement of "receiving education both before and after the lunch period", before being eligible to receive free school meals.
