Sentencing
This topic follows on quite importantly from the Criminal Courts topic. Students will now be expected to consider not only the court's powers to sentence but also the reasoning behind the decision to sentence. This should in turn engage students to consider what they believe to be the most suitable remedy when a criminal offence has been committed. It will ask the students to evaluate existing measures but also to consider alternatives that have yet to have been considered or even created within the existing framework.
A breakdown of the topic:
a) The role of the courts
b) Aims of sentencing
c) Sentencing in practice in the courts

f) Mentally ill offenders
g) Anti-Social Behaviour Orders
h) Penal policies and their effects
